Burlingtons – Taking India places!
Hey guys,
I wanted to talk to you about something extremely interesting today. I recently got an opportunity to work with Burlingtons India for a catalog shoot for their latest collection. It was then that I learned about this Indian legacy.
In 1957, Burlingtons was envisioned as an exclusive boutique selling women and men’s wear, catering to the local elite as well as an international clientele. It soon expanded from one store to 28 high fashion retail outlets, initially in Calcutta and Delhi and eventually to other big cities in the country - the flagship store is in the prestigious Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai.
Burlington export essentially is a manufacturing sector to the group of companies that represent the best of what India has to offer to substantial luxury brands in Europe and the USA, covering 47 international clients.
Rudhra Kapur, the Managing Partner and Creative Director of the company, son of Gabrielle and Andre Kapur and the grandson of Burlingtons’ founder Mr. Shori Lal currently spearheads Burlingtons. Rudhra trained as a tailor at the Paris Academy of Fashion in London and at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in India bringing in 27 years of experience in the field.
During our conversation, I asked Rudhra if he just wanted to carry the legacy forward or if he was actually deeply interested in the field. Why did he decide to take up this role? And he replied – “My career in designing was embedded in my genes, growing up with textile and fashion industrial parents, watching how cutters turned flat fabrics into dimensional wearable clothing fascinated me immensely and led me to studying both textile and fabric technology all based upon a foundation in the arts and human dimensions and proportions”.
The Fall Winter 19/20 collection is deeply embedded in the spirit of modern living and covers grounds from leisure, resort, lounge and cruise wear and on to city, executive and corporate wear, further moving on to cocktail, party and festive wear which then migrates on to trousseau and formal wear.
